Does the tank have anti-surge dam and baffles

Yes, to maximise fuel usage from the new larger tank we have baffles and a built in chamber around the fuel pickup unit to help avoid pickup cavitation sucking in air, these features can be especially useful when accidentally running low on fuel or driving on sloping terrain.
With larger tanks having bigger surface areas baffles also help add strength for those odd knocks and dents you can’t avoid.

Is a combo fuel water tank available?

Yes, but this is a factory fit only, we are located in Barnsley NSW, 2 hrs north of Sydney
This is a combination stainless steel water tank combined in the one fitting location to offer approximately 37L water and 87L fuel, so if this option suits your needs book a trip to Newcastle. For further information on our combo tanks see them in the Landcruiser 100 & Landcruiser 200 tank pages.

How will the trip computer function?

Unlike other Toyota’s at time of release in 2011 the FJ does not have a trip computer in the AU spec models so we are unable to advise how it functions. If from another country and your vehicle has one, typically a Toyota trip computer will no longer function as the fuel tank capacity used for the calculation is stored into a closed system and we are unable to adjust to allow for larger capacity fuel now being carried. Note: If you have experience in this field and have the skills to change or provide a solution we would like to hear from you.

Can I fit a larger sports exhaust system?

We have approximately 40 to 50mm minimum clearance on the standard tailpipe, if you have a larger modified exhaust system it will most likely fit providing it runs in about the same place as the standard tailpipe, check with your exhaust system manufacturer if it follows the path of the standard system.
In the USA if you have an ALLPRO or AFE HITUCK tailpipe our tank will not be compatible with these due to their location on the inside of the chassis rail rather than underneath it like the standard system, see the gallery pics for the standard exhaust location. If you have a BASSANI twin exhaust system (and most likely any other brand) it is not compatible with our longrange tank.
We haven’t been able to find details of the TRD exhaust in the US so cant comment on it’s compatibility, if you have a pic of one from under the back and would like to fit our tank, just email us the pic and we can see how it looks.

Will the tank fit with USA sourced accessories?

At the time of release this Long Ranger was designed to fit with the available accessories such as the genuine Toyota towbar, ARB and Kaymar rear bars, air bags, and larger shocks.

We have emailed a couple of the USA rear bar manufacturers of popular brands in the forums but had no response, we have seen a picture of the warn rear bar and the mounting system looks similar to the Australian manufacturers so we have no reason to believe there will be any issues.

Prior to the Australian FJ release in 2011 ARB made a towbar (#5720010) to suit their rear bar for the US market, looking at the fitting instructions I suspect the way this mounts behind the rear cross member it may not be compatible with our tank as it intrudes into the tank space, if you have one of these and would also like our tank, send us a pic from underneath and we can verify compatibility for you.

Is the departure angle affected?

All tanks are not created equal when it comes to ground clearance, here at The LongRanger we take the latest 3D modeling techniques and combine with old fashioned common sense (and a few late nights) to individually design a shape for each model of vehicle that efficiently uses the available space around the floor and chassis of a vehicle. This allows us to make a tank with the largest capacity yet minimal if any impact on ground clearance. The FJ’s standard departure angle of 31 degrees is not affected by the fitment of a LongRanger Fuel Tank. There are a few good pictures in the gallery that will give you a good idea of what to expect.
If ground clearance is very important, the smaller of our two tanks will be just the ticket for you as it sits up very high yet more than doubles the standard range .

Is there a way I can maximise the fuel usage from the LongRanger Auxiliary tank?

This is just a little tip to help those of us that like to use every last drop. The pickup is located at the front left corner of the tank, so although we have built a dam and baffles to help pickup all the fuel on those occasions you need every last drop we recommend having the front left corner of the vehicle be slightly lower to pump every last drop out of the tank.
The pumps can be run for a short time without fuel in the tank, so on the odd times you need to use all the fuel this is not an issue.

Can I overfill the main tank during the fuel transfer?

As both tanks are connected via the new twin filler installed during installation any excess fuel pumped into the main tank simply backs up the filler and overflows back into the auxiliary tank until either you turn the pump off or the Auxiliary is emptied, this is applicable for models prior to 2015.
Since 2015 our tanks come standard with an automatic pump cut off that is controlled by timers that turns the pump off before the main tank is filled.  The kit is supplied with a detailed owners manual on this system.

I have dual fuel (LPG) will the long ranger fit?

If your LPG tank is mounted behind the rear diff, this is the same location as the longranger and therefore both cannot be fitted to the same vehicle.

Does The Long Ranger have a drain plug

Yes, although some OEM and aftermarket tanks don’t come fitted with a drain plug we believe this is a must have feature when traveling the outback as you never know if you have to drain the tank in the advent of picking up a bad load of fuel.

Can I remove the tank and fit it to a new FJ when I trade In

Yes this is possible providing the chassis and the floor pan are the same design in the future. During the installation we shorten the filler neck by removing the screw thread for the cap and drill a hole in the dash for the switch mounting. If you intend on doing this you should ask the fitter to retain any parts removed or swap them with your new vehicle in the future.
This tank will not fit models that come standard with twin tanks from the factory.

Will this tank fit the Prado

NO, although the chassis are very similar and this FJ tank is based on our 3 door 150 series Prado tank which is designed as a direct replacement to the factory tank also located behind the rear axle, where as our FJ cruiser tank although similar in shape has been designed with all the extra tank fittings and a more comprehensive fitting kit that is required by an Auxiliary tank (2nd tank) which supplements the vehicles factory mid mounted tank.

What is the difference between the tank models available

The “L” version is the largest capacity and sits well within the departure angle of the vehicle, besides the obvious difference in capacity the “S” version has approximately 80mm more ground clearance than the “L” version at the rear edge of the tank and is designed for maximum ground clearance. The “HD” versions listed are built to order with an additional 4mm steel plate fully welded to the base giving a total of 6mm thickness, see the gallery for an animation of the HD plate being fitted to a “L” version tank.
A custom “W” version can be fitted in our factory at Barnsley and is actually two tanks, one stainless steel water tank and one aluminised fuel tank combined for the one fitting, the outside profile of the two combined tanks is almost identical to the “L” version tank and looks exactly the same from under the vehicle, capacity will be approximately 87lt fuel and 37lt water.

Where does the tank mount

The Landcruiser FJ Long range fuel tank is located behind the rear axle. When combined with the mid mounted factory 72L tank the new total fuel capacity is 156L or 192L depending on the longranger model fitted

Does this tank installation kit include a carbon canister to meet the legal anti pollution requirements for my registration

Yes, from 2015 we supply an additional carbon canister in our kits, these are mounted inline with the OEM canister to boost the amount of carbon used to help capture the larger volume of hydrocarbons created from a much bigger tank and assist in a cleaner environment.
Any tank supplied in Australia from 2015 must be installed with a canister to make it legal.

Can I buy a carbon canister for another application

No, Long Ranger have designed these canisters to work with our specific designs and are only supplied complete with our tanks.

Do I have to transfer fuel when my main tank gauge is on 1/4 like the operating manual says?

No, you can transfer fuel from the Auxiliary to the main whenever you choose, but the automatic pump cut off timer has been setup in our factory for this optimal fuel level in the main tank, below are some words on the design of this system for a better understanding.
We have chosen this level of fuel in the main tank mostly for safety, if you start the transfer process at this level and there is a malfunction for some reason and the fuel does not transfer to the main tank you will notice the gauge in the main tank continue to go down as you drive rather than going up like it usually will.
By having a 1/4 of a tank left rather than nearly empty you will have time to make a judgment on what needs to be done to sort it out, although very unlikely, things like a blown fuse or blocked fuel filter on the transfer pump could cause the fuel not to transfer.
If you wish to transfer fuel before the main tank gets to 1/4 the automatic pump cut off timer will not have been operating for long enough to activate, in this case when the main tank is full the pump can be turned of manually.

How do I know when to turn the transfer pump off

Our transfer pump system has a timer based automatic pump cut off so you don’t need to worry about buzzers or running your pump dry if you forget to turn it off.

If the auxiliary is bigger than the Main tank we have a timer to turn the pump off so you don’t overfill the main tank, we have a second timer that will turn the pump off when the Auxiliary is nearing empty.
With a transfer rate of Approximately 1.7L per minute the pump can be turned off or on at any stage to transfer small amounts of fuel or you can simple push the button to activate the transfer process and leave it for the timer to automatically turn the pump off.
Our kits are supplied from the factory with a comprehensive user manual on how to use the system and the timer module has been setup with specific settings to suit each vehicle application for quick and easy installation.

How will I know how much fuel is left in the auxiliary tank

A compact LED Gauge is mounted in the dash to show approximately how much fuel is left.
Once the automatic timer has cut in there is a flashing light to indicate the pump will soon turn off.

How do I transfer fuel to the main tank

Depending on how you want to use your new Auxiliary fuel tank, you can either activate the pump to transfer a small amount of fuel as you drive to keep the main tank topped up and transfer the weight from the auxiliary tank to the main tank and turn the pump off when the main is full.  Or you can just wait till the main tank gauge is around ¼ and transfer the fuel at the touch of a button and let the timer turn the pump off automatically.  NOTE: If the Auxiliary tank is larger than the main tank you will be able to transfer a second amount of fuel in order to completely empty the auxiliary tank. An owners manual update and user manual are provided in the fitting kit with a guide to the operating procedure of the Longranger.

Can I Transfer fuel at any stage

Yes you can.  We generally recommend starting the transfer when the main tank gauge is about ¼ full,  but if you are loaded up on a big trip it is good practice to distribute the weight by perhaps pumping small amounts of fuel from the Auxiliary tank to the Main tank.  A detailed user manual is provided in the kit to give you all the info to take advantage of this great accessory.

Transfer Pump

Compatible with All Fuels including new blended Diesels, Solid Sate Cube pumps have low power requirements (about 1-2 amps at 12 volts) and operate without troublesome seals or diaphragms. Built-in pressure relief and are Self Priming to 300mm (we test our pumps to 500mm with no issues). They have a free flow rate of 2L per minute and 1.71L per minute when used as a transfer pump on a typical auxiliary tank application with 8mm fuel lines, and fuel filter installed.

One of the most important factors in the reliability of these pumps is the internal electronics and the sealing used during manufacture. We have tested several other cube pumps sourced from china and the US and found the best there is.

In one test we do, many of the cheaper pumps that are sold in the Australian market do not pass a water immersion test and stop immediately due to poor sealing. Others will only run for 10 or 15min after being submersed in the water. The pumps we use have to handle being submersed completely under water while pumping 120L of fuel, they are then tested for another 1000 hrs to ensure they keep running. This is extremely important when used on a 4wd as frequent river crossings can be an every day occurrence.

Note: Cube fuel pumps are not compatible with EFI fuel systems.

These pumps are also suitable for applications requiring an external electric fuel pump, including replacement of old mechanical pumps on low and high-pressure carburettor-equipped cars, vans, Motor Homes, farm equipment and light trucks or use as a Diesel lift pump, they can also be used to replace unreliable fuel pumps on Classics with 4cyl or 6cyl power output of up to 150bhp

Fitting:

Lightly oil the threads on the hose fittings. Apply torque in a continuous manner to 15 ft-lbs. The pump and fitting threads are dry seal threads which do not require thread sealant if the fittings are properly installed.

Apply a  74 micron fuel filter on the inlet side of the pump to protect the pump from contaminates in the fuel. This will ensure trouble free operation of the fuel pumps for many years.

Select a mounting location as close to the fuel tank as practical and not more than 300m above the bottom of the tank. Generally speaking, fuel pumps push fuel better than they draw fuel. The pump should generally be mounted with the outlet elevated above the inlet to assist with priming ability and also helps purge the system of air. Additionally select a location away from excessive heat sources.

Apply pump to a properly fused circuit of 3-5 amps.

Trouble Shooting:

If the pumps fails to make a clicking noise with power applied make sure there is proper power to the pump and the voltage is correct. Also check fuse, wire connections and proper grounding of the negative lead wire.

If the pump makes clicking noise but fails to deliver fuel make sure there is fuel in the tank and the filter is not clogged.

Does this long ranger fuel tank fit with towbars

Generally we try to make our tanks fit with most towbars on the market at the time we design our tank, occasionally a particular towbar is built in such a way that to make our tank compatible would result in very little extra fuel capacity gained,  if there are any known issues with specific models we mention this on the specifications tab under “other mods”

Where are the tanks made

While there is a popular belief that all the big brands are made in a country with a cheap manufacturing base in the same factory with a different badge at The Long Ranger we still design and manufacture our tanks in Australia were it all started way back in the late 70’s.  We are a family run company based in Newcastle employing local people and that’s not about to change anytime soon.

Is the GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) affected

No, adding a tank is the same as any other accessory and is utilising the vehicles payload capacity IE: anything added to the vehicle from the manufactures specification is using the payload capacity, whether it be driving lights, a set of rubber mats, a LongRanger fuel tank or the kids. As with most vehicles from a manufacturer the standard springs are not designed to cope with a constant full load on an extended trip, we recommend fitting a set of heavier rated springs such as those from Old Man Emu that have been designed to carry the extra weight of a fully loaded vehicle set up for camping.

Do the tanks come complete ready to fit

Yes they do, you may have heard on the grape vine that some aftermarket tank suppliers ship their products with poor fitting instructions and incomplete kits that make a trip to the local auto store a necessity to finish the job. At the LongRanger we supply comprehensive installation instructions with lots of photos to ensure the job is done as efficiently as possible and a complete installation kit ready to install so your local fitter can be rest assured there will be no expensive delays sourcing bits and pieces to finish the job!

Do I need an extra protection plate

Standard OEM fuel tanks manufactured with plastic construction or thin turn plate often require an extra bash plate for protection. Being made from 2mm “aluminised steel” with internal baffling our tanks are designed to handle the odd scrap and dint you would expect with general 4wd use or outback touring and offer excellent strength and durability in these situations. Depending on your intended vehicle use if you often find when out on the trail turning back is not an option and your forced to test your vehicle to it’s limits or if you’ll be doing lots of hard off roading in steep and rocky terrain we may have other options more suitable for you such as a smaller tank with more ground clearance or a “HD” version with a heavy duty protection plate welded directly to the bottom of the tank.

Is the LongRanger design compatible with other accessories

There is nothing worse than buying an accessory to find it’s not compatible with something else you have fitted, we might not be first to market, but that’s because we try our best to design our long range tanks to be suitable with all models in the range and most other popular accessories you might want to install either now or in the future. Although we have designed our tanks with maximum compatibility in mind, if you have something specially fitted to your vehicle that is of concern we have provided a good selection of pictures in the gallery showing the installation to give a clear idea where The LongRanger fits under the vehicle.

How long is the warranty period

All LongRanger manufactured products are covered by a 3-year warranty.
Note: There are some third party components not made by The LongRanger such as fuel pumps, sender units and switches etc found in some kits that come with their own 12 month manufacturers warranty.

What are the tanks made from

All LongRanger fuel tanks are made from Aluminised steel. This product is manufactured by the steel mill using 2mm (14gauge) cold rolled steel with a thin aluminium coating applied during the manufacturing process. Aluminised steel offers excellent weight vs. strength and durability when compared to lighter aluminium that just doesn’t have the raw strength to stand up to the hard knocks the underneath of a vehicle can suffer or the heavier Stainless steel that is more prone to fatigue cracks caused by embrittlement in the heat affected zone from the welding process.

Below is a list of standard accessories we have checked for compatibility with our tanks and strive to ensure compatibility with.
Alternatively if you have something a little different please check our pictures and advise the sales staff to allow extra time for fitting if you think you have something that might cause a problem on the day or if you are planning an extensive list of modifications to your truck use our pictures to make sure our tank will fit in with your plans for the best chance to get it setup the way you want.
As our fuel and water tanks are designed to make use of space under your vehicle anything else fitted could cause and issue on the day of fitting, things such as trundle draws, air tanks, tipper trays, water tanks, custom trays with low floors, batteries, extra tyre, structural chassis changes etc can all cause an unexpected issue, delays or even non fitting in a worst case scenario.

 

While our tanks have been primarily designed to fit Australian models prior to early 2000, Since then car manufacturers have been getting smarter and making their cars on global platforms so they generally fit vehicles of the same model in other countries.
Your local ARB dealer may be able to assist with any fitment questions as they may have some prior experience with your particular model.
Another good resource is to check our photo gallery for an idea of the shape and location of our tank. Some common areas to look for possible issues with models in other countries would be: is the filler on the same side, do the chassis look the same around the tank location, If choosing a replacement tank, is the genuine tank the same capacity as with the genuine Australian spec model, Does the exhaust run in the same place, Do you have different genuine or non-genuine accessories fitted that may not be available in Australia for us to verify that may be affected with a new fuel tank.

These tanks will not fit the US based models due to the OEM carbon canister being located in the tank area, if this is relocated there should be no issues. As these tanks are an Auxiliary tank design to fit where no other tank current exists they will not fit OEM twin tank based vehicles

Carbon Canister. When adding additional fuel capacity there is a legal and moral requirement to install a larger or secondary carbon canister.

Carbon canisters contain activated carbon which absorb and store fuel vapour to reliably reduce the emission of hydrocarbons and pollutants into the atmosphere.

Every petrol tank has a pressure balance pipe, which ensures that no vacuum develops as the tank is emptied, and that heating and expansion of the fuel does not create overpressure in the tank. When overpressure is relieved the fuel fumes that escape are routed through the system breather to the activated carbon where they are captured and stored.

When driving the car these hydrocarbons are burned during normal operation as they are purged via a vacuum line from the engine drawing fresh air back through the canister.

Since 2015 LongRanger is the only brand available in Australia to embark on a major initiative which will eventually see all required models shipped with a carbon canister as a standard feature.

This industry first is part of The LongRanger’s efforts for a more sustainable environment.

Switch/Gauge Timer. All you have to do is turn the transfer pump on when your main tank gets to ¼ full, our timer module will take care of the rest.

No worrying about when to turn it off, no annoying buzzers.

A neat round profile including a LED display with push button switch for transferring fuel. The switch/gauge has an automatic dimming function for easy on the eye night driving. With its small footprint (20mm hole x 65mm depth) this unit will fit neatly into just about any modern vehicle.

Another unique feature incorporated in most of our Auxiliary tanks is the timer function to turn the transfer pump off automatically. We have incorporated two timers to turn the pump off, these are activated when the auxiliary tank is getting low or when the main tank is almost full. The timer modules are set at our factory to suit each tank and shipped ready to use as the settings vary depending on the size of the Auxiliary and Main tanks.

A comprehensive owners operating manual is provided in our fitting kit outlining all the details to maximise the use of this great feature. Along with the LED bar style gauge we have a “pump on” light to remind you it is transferring fuel and when the pump has entered the countdown mode to turn off automatically it will start to flash to let you know it’s almost completed the transfer. Switch/Gauges are covered by the manufacturers 12 month warranty.

senderSender Unit. To ensure the safe operation of your vehicle it is important to be reliably informed about the current fuel level at all times. Our 0-90 ohms senders measure the level in the tank and send the information to the LED display. The fuel sending unit has a float that connects itself to the metal rod. The end of this rod is connected to the variable resistor that resists the electrical flow. Our sender units are covered by the manufacturers 12 month warranty.

shapeShape. Good design practices are what make a fuel tank both usable and functional. Some manufactures build cheap large sheet metal boxes and bolt them under a vehicle and call it a fuel tank. At the LongRanger we take the design a little more serious. Attention to detail and decades of experience building tanks has taught us what it takes to make a great product.

 


pbsParallel Break Strengthening. Just like CBS this feature aids in the stiffening of large flat panels and reduces the risk of a fuel or water tank suffering from fatigue related stress cracks when travelling on extreme corrugations. We usually incorporate these on the very bottom of a tank.

 


bafflesBaffles. help add strength to the bottom of a tank, this is especially important for a 4WD when bottoming the tank out on obstacles with the pickup unit sitting on the bottom which could be damaged, if the new tank design is lower than the OEM tank this is even more important with the tank being more vulnerable to accidental obstacle contact. A well designed longrange tank should incorporate baffles for improved offroad performance as baffles also help retain the fuel around the pickup unit.  With longrange tanks generally being longer or wider than the OEM tank when low on fuel it can “run away” from the pickup when driving in undulating terrain and possibly cause the engine to starve for fuel leaving you in an unpredictable situation and potentially unsafe location.
